Santa Claus Day: when boots make a career, chocolate takes on a life of its own, and children suddenly all become angels

ree

As we enter December, something changes. The smell of cinnamon wafts through the air, Mariah Carey warms up frozen souls from the speakers of shopping malls, and people suddenly  become very seriously interested in footwear polishing. Yes, it can only mean one thing: Santa Claus is coming.

Where did this mystical red-clad phenomenon come from?

The story goes back deep to the 4th century, when there lived a good-natured and incredibly modest man, St. Nicholas, Bishop of Myra. He was the type of person who did not post "#segítettemegycsaládon", but quietly smuggled gifts into the windows of those in need under the cover of night. Today we would call this hidden charity, then a "holy lifestyle".

According to legend, St. Nicholas was the first to recognize:

  • gift-giving is better in secret,

  • the experience of surprise is priceless,

  • And a well-timed bag of goodness can certainly save lives.

The custom then traveled around Europe, jumped across continents, and by the time we noticed it, it had become the modern Santa Claus, who comes from the north, with reindeer, in red clothes, and guaranteed more chocolate than anyone could reasonably justify.

How long have we been celebrating Santa Claus?

In Hungary,  St. Nicholas' Day was already known and popular in the Middle Ages. By the 19th century, the ritual we know today had developed:

  • shiny boots,

  • excited children,

  • mysterious night search in the window,

  • And of course, the definitely non-organic, but all the more lovely chocolate Santa Claus.

This holiday is the perfect transition from the greyness of November to the glamour before Christmas. You could say that Santa Claus is the forerunner of Christmas, who makes the beginning of winter more bearable with a mini celebration.

What should we keep in mind in such cases?

1. The miracle, because at this time everyone is a little bit of a child again.

Santa Claus Day is a reminder that sometimes we need a little magic in our lives. You don't have to think about big things: a small chocolate on a colleague's table, a nice message in your partner's boots, or a smile at a stranger on the bus is enough. Small things, big impact.

2. Intimacy, the first step of slowing down.

December 6 is like someone gently turning on the "slow down and enjoy the moment" button. At this time, not only the lights come on, but also the atmosphere. Hide under a blanket, drink a gingerbread tea, and let the beauty of winter seep into the rush.

3. The role of humor, because it is standard equipment for Santa Claus.

The Krampus would never approve of taking this holiday too seriously. At Santa Claus, playfulness, pranks and laughter are allowed – and even recommended. If ever it was justified to hide funny messages in boots, it is now.

4. The joy of giving, because it is not the amount of chocolate that counts.

The soul of Santa Claus Day is attention, kindness and love. Not the price, but the gesture.

The most important thing is this: to experience the magic

It doesn't matter if you're a small child, an adult, a Krampus or secretly still a Santa Claus devotee: on December 6, it's good to have a little faith in the festive miracle. Because in this fast-paced world, it is a really rare moment when the boots are in the window and the hope that something dear awaits us in the morning.

Finally, a heartfelt piece of advice:

If Santa Claus takes care of the chocolate supply, then we at PMMHealth take care of the soul-warming content.

We hope that reading PMMHealth's blog posts will always be an experience, maybe Santa Claus himself will adjust his hat!
